I read in Braille. I have two displays, the Tieman Voyager and the
HandyTech Braille Wave. The latter I use with my cell phone and for reading
on my many business trips--I flew over fifty times this year, so HandyTech
is truly handy. The cell phone is to send and get text messages and for
GPS. But at home, with my laptop, for a variety of specific reasons I
prefer the Voyager.

the one I use most is the voice output via JAWS. Second , I use a
refreshable Braille display (mostly use the display for editing).

I would be the first to say that many people who oppress others are very
nice people. Most of them have no idea what they're doing. Most often,
oppression is a collective sickness, not an individual-based disease or lack
of morals.
This is why there needs to be a collective response to oppression. While
there are going to be a small group of people on each side that are going to
react violently or extremely to any and all shifts in power--the one
asserting itself, the other digging in their heels; the one protesting, the
other defending--after each shift, things settle down but in a subtly
different way, and change progresses on a wide scale without anyone really
thinking or noticing. The number of black and women CEOs, for example, keep
on rising, slowly but surely, and suddenly we have a black president. This
didn't happen overnight, but the slow ball that got rolling that reached to
this point did require violent actions in the past.
Most people, they are nice enough. There just needs to be shifts in the
power, people need to be more aware, at first maybe consciously but later it
becomes second nature to them. It used to be that on buses blacks and
whites could not sit in the same section at all. So when that began to
change, maybe it took some effort for whites to swallow and hold their
peace, and it took some blacks some tentative courage to sit up front, not
quite trusting that they really can get away with this. You know?
Most of the time, individuals have no idea why they feel threatened or even
realize they are acting to perfect sociological logical that'[s beyond their
direct consciousness.
Sometimes people turn oppressor by accident, sort of. If a class or even a
person is at a great disadvantage, and not always directly thanks to the
efforts of the oppressors, the people with greater advantage fills in the
vacuum left in the relationship because the other is constrained for some
reason. Two examples:
The battered woman. It is common that after the woman flees her abuser
after years of abuse, she is at a great emotional disadvantage and extremely
vulnerable. It often happens that she gets involved in a new relationship
with a nice man with absolutely no history of abuse but the man gradually
becomes abusive. This is sort of like him becoming this monster by
"accident." But two factors contribute to this: The man is not aware,
consciously, of the dynamics of a good relationship. He just goes with the
flow. The other factor is that the woman has not yet become healthy and
assertive, so there is a vacuum between the place where she should be in an
equal relationship, providing half of the force in that direction meeting
the other force that makes it work well, and the place she is, still in her
cocoon and very weak.
The other example is found in prisons. Because the prisoners are caged,
shackled, stripped of equal rights and privileges, they are unable to assert
themselves and are operating under great and imposed disadvantages. The
guards, no matter how nice they were before they became guards, they become
sadists and you could not believe the things they do to the prisoners. A
few are able to remain good and respectful, because they are well trained
and take to heart their jobs and they know how to keep within their
boundaries. But most of them just go with the flow, and they naturally make
up for the slack in the relationship.
This is precisely why I am a fan of SOME segregation, through which a group
can establish their own identity, their values, and have a solid foundation
for their basic humanity and self-esteem. This helps considerably in making
them assertive and avoids leaving vacuum space that would attract abuse and
oppression.
That is why I would be very nervous with the idea of a blind child always
among sighted people, at home and at school, all of her life. Unless the
parents, teachers, etc. genuinely respect blindness and empower the blind
child and reinforces positively all the right things--well, there's a vacuum
there, and it's going to be filled and that's very bad news for the
psychological health and quality of life of that blind child.
And I am betting my last Helen Keller quarter that most of those teachers
and parents are--I truly shudder--just go with the flow.

I don't see it that way, no pun intended. Black people, yellow people,
white people, we all bleed red. If a person feels victimized by whatever
does that necessarily mean that someone is oppressing them? If one person
is poorer than the other does that mean that the richer person has spent his
life oppressing the poorer one? Not at all. Robert Frost wrote that there
were two roads diverged in the woods. However, he was wrong. There are
many routes out of the woods. Each of us chooses to follow a different one.
Some of those paths lead to riches, others to poverty, some to happiness and
others to misery in which the individual is caught up in the emotions of
envy and hate. Some have divergent paths all rolled up in one body.
However, it is not always the other guy who is responsible for our
inferiority complex. Judith
