Hi Aziza,

It's been approximately thirty years since I read the first one, and I
don't remember much about it. I recently ordered the new one, but
haven't read it yet. I will tell you a Tom Sullivan anecdote, but first
a bit of perspective on his being one of the "most famous advocates"
... How many famous blind people have there been in the past fifty
years? Tom has had a successful career as a singer, but he wasn't a
superstar. He may be a tireless advocate -- though I don't know what
his perspectives are -- but he's in a very small group of blind people
who have achieved some measure of fame. It is a group that does not
include women; I have yet to ask the public to name a successful blind
woman in any field and get any other answer than Helen Keller, who died
fifty years ago.

Now, the story. As you know, I pursued a career as a
singer/songwriter. After reading his book, I wrote to him and sent him
a demo tape. At the time, I was living in Philadelphia. I actually
received a response from him encouraging me to continue with my music,
though he cautioned me to have another line of work to fall back on. I
took the first part of his advice, but not the second.

Let us know what you think of the books.
Donna
