Hi All,
When I was seeking representation, I Used John's "shot gun" method. Of course, many said, "No thank you." But several responded favorably and were simultaneously reading sample chapters of my manuscript. If you're lucky, more than one agent might offer their services, and you can pick and choose which one you feel can best earn their 15%. Remember: Legitimate literary agencies NEVER charge reading, editing, or copying fees. Their earnings should be subtracted from the author's advances and royalties only. 15% is the standard rate, so don't let anyone try to convince you otherwise. Some argue that an agent isn't a necessary tool for a beginning writer, but I would disagree based on the fact that approximately 95% of the publishing market is closed to unsolicited manuscripts, which makes it quite difficult to place a full-length work without someone who has good contacts. I know I wouldn't have ever have gotten my foot in the door at the large commercial publishing houses, had it not been for my agent. She's handling the aspects of my career that would dry up my creative flow, if I had to wade through them alone, so I'm grateful for her services.
Amy
