Hello Jim:
If you want to convert a table to text, do the following:
1. Move your cursor to an element of the table. You have to be in the table.
2. Press alt-a to bring up the Table menu. You can also press alt and use
the right arrow to find the Table menu.
3. In the Table menu, press down-arrow until you are on Convert.
4. In the Convert submenu, you will have two choices, "convert table to
text" or "convert text to table".
5. Press the table to text option and your table will be turned into tab
delimited text. Watch for options to change the delimiting character.
If you want to save a document as a .txt file, use the Save-As option. When
presented with the file name, delete the .doc extension, press tab and then
select the format you want with the up and down arrows. You then have to
press tab to get to the save button.
