As for sending or publishing your book on line there are a few things to 
consider.  If you want it published with a publishing house, why should they 
put out the money for a book that everyone can access for free?  I wouldn't 
publish it on line unless that market was what you've been writing for.  As 
for the cutting down, that's what I've been doing for mine.  If there are 
too many characters walking around your novel a publisher will look at it 
and wonder what he's getting into!  While you are editting or paring down 
try to simplify.  I'm about to cut a few chapters out of my book.  HTH
