Informative article. If book publishing follows after music publishing, it
is in for a world of hurt. The music industry was hit big time with
digital media. Many acts these days look at CDs as tokens to get them to
concerts to sell merchandise and etc. This of course isn't doable for
authors accept in book signings and isn't really set up for that type of
promotion. There is also exploration being done to add additional media
to music CDs which hasn't really taken off yet... perhaps that will save
the pricing structure of books, however it takes a lot more resources,
talent and time to accomplish multi-media books so $ for work is still
probably not so hot.

Years ago you'd buy a car and the registration fee was based on the
weight, why? Of course they were heavy boats riding around. When the
lighter sub compact cars came out and the large cars were fading into the
sunset, the states saw financial loss coming and subsequently changed the
fee base to year of model.

Similarly book pricing ought be based not on what it costs to make a book,
but the consumer value it is, the knowledge or content based fee. People
are employed and paid according to their knowledge and value to employers,
books ought be no different.

After all, it takes less than a minute and the cost of a mediocre dinner
to make a person, but look at the time and resources it takes to make a
book. *smile* Little levity to lighten the load.
