[stylist] Working definition of Creative non-fiction

Hello folks,

I write fiction as well as non-fiction, but my major is in creative non-fiction. In a nutshell, creative non-fiction applies fictional techniques to non-fiction. Non-fiction itself is a very broad genre. There is personal essay, memoir, autobiography, etc. Elements of all of these can be used together as well as separately.

When critiquing any non-fiction there is not much difference between fiction critiquing. The basic elements apply. Some great examples of creative non-fiction writer's would be David Sedaris, Joan Didian, Annie Dillard, Meghan Daum, Gertrude Stein, James Baldwin, just to name a few.

Creative non-fiction is not exactly new, but contemporary writers are taking it to new heights. It can be experimental as well as traditional.

By the by, just like fiction, non-fiction does not have to be written in a linear narrative. The piece I submitted for review is not written as a linear narrative if that helps anyone.

Hope this all makes sense. Any questions? *smile*
