[stylist] Punctuation and editing

One other thing, when editing, I will go through whatever I am working
on multiple times, each time looking for specific things. So in one
read, I will be paying attention to punctuation, the next read, I will
make sure all quotes are correct, the next read, I will be looking for
sentence structure, etc. Again, it takes time, but it works.

Along with specific tools that come along with JAWS and reading through
for specific reasons, has worked for me.

Hey guys,

First, if you can use Braille and have access to either a refreshable
Braille device or Braille embosser, you can check all the same spelling,
grammar and structure issues as sighted people. Just a quick plug for
Braille. *smile*

If you solely use JAWS to edit, though, it is not always as difficult as
you might think. It is an adjustment, but it can be done. One big
helpful feature of JAWS is that you can turn on a feature that will read
all punctuation including commas and apostrophies. Go to the JAWS
window and pull up the option menu, then go to basics, then tab until
you hear punctuation and select "all punctuation ." The short cut is to
press insert and V which will bring up the verbocity dialogue box, then
it will list different options, press P until you hear punctuation,
press space bar to change the punctuation mode. Do this until you hear
"all."

By the way, we will have a guest speaker for a monthly meeting (probably
after the New Year) who will talk about how to use JAWS for editing
purposes.

Anyway, hope this helps.

Bridget,
Thanks, switching Jaws to read all punctuation is an excellent
suggestion. It never even occurred to me. It's a pain when you're just
reading something, but for editing it's a great idea. That will probably

make a difference in how Jaws reads Spell Check as well.

Bridget, Before my hard drive was replaced Jaws told me when on a line
that
I had whatever number of spelling/grammer errors on that line. I can'
remember how to get that back. Also, this told me that a word was
misspelled right after I spelled it. I already have jaws set to
announce
all punctuation. Judith

Judith,

I think what you might be referring to is a feature in Word that
corrects spelling and alerts you right away. Check out your
tools/options menu, then your Spelling and Grammar tab. There are
tick boxes for checking as you go, making suggestions and etc. As far
as I know, there has never been an actual spell checking tool in
Jaws, it is likely reading a part of the screen. The newer Jaws has a
thing called Text Analyzer which will alert you of multiple spaces,
open ended quotes, open parenthesis and other issues. But it didn't
seem to catch my test goofs.

I'd be interested in getting what you described though, but I can't
get it to work on here.

Brad, I just went to tools and options. The things that were checked on
the
tool bar had nothing to do with what I'm looking for. I hit spelling
and
grammer but all jaws told me was that the document I was working in had
no
spelling errors. We'll have to keep searching. Thanks, Judith

Judith,
You're welcome. Here's what to do. I had to really look because it's
changed
in JAWS since the last time I played with it.

While in MS Word, press Insert (JAWS Key) and the number 6 (from the
number
row) to open the JAWS configuration file for Word. Press alt-S for the
settings menu and arrow down to "speech and sound schemes." When you've
opened this dialogue, select "proofreading attributes and font
information"
and tab to the OK button and hit enter. This will give you information
about
fonts and indentation. You can find settings for the spelling and
grammar
errors in the verbosity settings by pressing Insert-V from within your
word
document. If anyone wants more detailed information on that process, let
me
know.

Alan, Thanks for this. I am interested in the verbocity settings. From

what I'm seeing here that is what will give me spelling and grammer
errors
as I type and proof read line by line. Thanks, Judith

I normally keep the punctuation setting turned off in jaws but when I
submit something important I turn the punctuation on so I can find
things like misplaced periods etc.

Although I use the spell and grammar checker in Word, I never depend on
it as the last word. I am wondering though how people on this list deal
with the problem of submissions or other important documents that must
be free of errors. Are any of the proofreading programs accessible?
Are there ways to use jaws that would go further in iliminating typos
and such that are not picked up by the spell checker?

You can try playing around with some of the attributes in the schemes
and things like that.

Typos are usually picked up by jaws. Sometimes it takes moer than one
spell
check. I have my punctuation turned on in jaws so I hear any errors
constantly. I've found with the spell check they don't pick up missing
quotes. I guess for a lot of the errors I depend on my hearing errors
and
correcting the problem. That is why I liked it when I had errors read
at
the end of a line. I wish I could give you a real solution, but I
can't.

Judith,
press insert-V and arrow down to editing options when in a Word
document.
You will find auto correct detection, spelling error detection and
grammatical error detection. Press the space bar to set those to on and
then
press enter. That ought to help you.

Alan, I don't get it. Before my hard drive was changed I had this
option on
my computer. Now I just did what you suggested and I didn't have any
editting options in the verbocity menu. Thanks for your help, Judith

Jean,
One very important step in submitting error-free work is to have
someone
else give it a critical read. This is something most writers will do,
whether blind or not. An objective look can pick up spelling errors and
offer some grammatical input. I have a couple of people in my circle
with
whom I exchange such servicess. They send me things to look over and I
send
pieces to them. It's actually a pretty fun process, since each of us
have
our different interests and styles. I learn a lot about the fields of
library science and private pilotting from reading my sister's work and
she
and I have had some very deep philosophical discussions after she has
read
one of my metaphysical or mental health articles. This list can be a
great
resource, as well.
I also find that I can usually pick up such mistakes as the ".," one

mentioned by Donna, as well as have a pretty good ear for spelling
errors,
provided I don't put myself to sleep reading my own work! (grin) Now,
when a
spelling error results in a homonym, JAWS doesn't pick that up and
neither
does spell check, as it only checks for spelling, not appropriateness of
the
words. We can also recognize habitual errors we make and, when proofing,

check for these errors. For instance, because I type at about 120 wpm, I

frequently miss the synchronization of the "Shift" key with the letter
key;
therefore, when I proof my own work, I stop and check for capitals where

they should be.
Another important reason for having someone else examine your work
is to
help ensure you are communicating what you intend. You may know what you

want to say but may not say it! Sometimes we forget that not everyone
else
has the grasp of the subject we have. The reason we are writing is
because
we have a better grasp of the subject than others and a desire to share
this
knowledge or perspective. An objective look can help accomplish the goal
of
answering questions, rather than creating more! (smile) I know I have
read
some pieces that left me scratching my head!

Fraternally yours,
Marion Gwizdala
