And, follow the guidelines of your publishing house.  I think you said you
were skipping a literary agent, so see if your publisher has anything to say
on the matter since ultimately it is they who will have the most important
opinion.

Bridget, You are right in the minds of some.  I asked a family 
friend who 
has a PHD in English education what he recommends,.  He said no
