Here's one additional approach to the writer/reader relationship. They say
often an actor focuses on a single audience member in performing. In writing
my novel and various short stories, I have selected different individuals
for whom I have written these works. That isn't to say that I am writing
about these people, but I have selected them for their intellect, curiosity
or sometimes, for their unawareness, to write words addressed to them. The
other day I got feedback on a short story when someone for whom I did not
write it told his friend who then told me "She obviously knew me when she
was writing this." I felt a sense of triumph on that one.
Good luck however you select in your relationships,
Elizabeth
