Subject: [stylist] Submissions for fall Slate & Style
Lori and all,
No, a summer issue has not been released. Instead of
passive-aggressive attempts to handle this situation, I will be open and
honest, and explain why it has been so long since a magazine has been
published.
The past editor for Slate & Style was not able to continue the job. The
magazine was left with no editor at a time when it should have been in
the process of editing and releasing a winter issue. When I was offered
the editor position, no one else was participating in any process of the
magazine, and there was no organization or communication happening with
Slate & Style and those involved in its creation. It was decided we
would skip the winter issue so we could focus on restructuring the
magazine. I was not aware at the time of what whirlwind awaited me.
This summer has been crazy and full of unexpected events- good and bad.
I tried to commit to Slate & Style in January, and Robert and I both
agreed it would be best to wait before rushing out an issue so we could
have time to create the best publication possible for now. In late May,
before I had time to release the first issue, some things came up, and
along with my internship, I was not sure if I would be able to hold many
of my positions in the Federation.
I communicated this to Robert, and he shopped around to discover if any
others had interest in editing the magazine, but very few responded, and
he felt I was still the best qualified candidate for the editorship of
Slate & Style. Since my schedule will open up this fall leaving me more
flexible, I agreed to remain as editor. I made it clear that until the
end of August, my schedule would be hectic and unpredictable though.
I love editing material and designing a creative publication, but I'm
one person. I'm doing what I can with the time, and material, I
currently have. I'm a perfectionist who is organized and pays attention
to detail. My record as editor for The Nebraska Independent, and other
NFB related things I've done, shows I'm a hardass when it comes to
deadlines and work ethic. With Slate & Style, I took it on during a
turbulent process, switching editors during a time when the magazine
should have been released, and making major creative changes. In
January, I was not aware how hectic and cramped my schedule would be
this summer. I'm doing what I can at this moment, but rest assured that
from this point on, Slate & Style should follow a schedule, which is my
usual method for work I create.
I've experienced some personal things in the last few months, again,
both good and bad, and my internship kept me busier than I expected, and
my priority was to finish my last semester of school on top, plus
spending as much time as possible with our surrogate, Penny, who is
21-months-old and developing everyday. I apologize if Slate & Style has
not been my number one concern. Steps can be taken to remove me should
anyone be unhappy with my current standing as editor.
In the future, I would appreciate all complaints, grievances and of
course submissions, be sent directly to me. I'm not into
passive-aggressive games, and am willing to be up front and honest with
those who demonstrate respect and courtesy at least on a professional
level.
Sincerely,
Bridgit Kuenning-Pollpeter
Editor, Slate & Style

Bridgit, did I miss the last issue? I generally get print, but am
willing to switch to email. Lori
