[stylist] Another 40 word poem and note...

Hi Donna... I will put the tanka instructions and explanation up when I
get back from babysitting.. I should be back this afternoon early.

Yes, it was a mutual decision that no one but the two of us need know who
wrote what and it gave the readers something to wonder about as well.
Those who really know us well can probably figure it out but we have fooled
them also. The collaborative tanka as well have fooled people. We decided
early on that this collection was to be more about the tanka itself than the
writers who penned them.

If I don't post the tanka stuff, remind me please. I'm sitting for a 4
and almost 2 year old... Grandma will be a bit frazzled by the time she gets
home. HA HA

Hi Myrna,
First, could you tell us what a tanka is? My writing has been primarily in
nonfiction and fiction with an occasional dabble into poetry. I wrote poems
for each of my novel's characters in the Writers' Roundtable class, and I
write lyrics to my songs and an occasional haiku while I'm walking in the
country, but poetry is not my strong suit.

My other comment is that I think it's really neat and says something about
both you and your friend that you did not insist upon identifying the
author
of each poem in your collection.
Donna

Donna... I know what you're saying. I once had a love/hate relationship
with both haiku and tanka but now I love them both. Some of my 40-word
pieces are actually expanded tanka... A friend of mine approached me
about
doing a collection of tanka and we did.. I think that's when I 'got it'..
I

understood tanka finally and grew to love them.. we each wrote I think 50
or
so tanka and then collaborated on five. Only he and I know which tanka
belong to who in the book.. so my love for the short verse has been there
for
awhile but I had never approached them in this way before. And thank you
for the kind comment on Nakedness... I truly do appreciate it..

Myrna,
Excellent! I'm going to have to try one of these myself. For me, it'll be
an
increase, as I'm most comfortable with that other little poem ... the
Haiku

Shawn... again wonderful! The images in this piece are stunning...
now
one more from me just to show that even I can take these in an
unexpected
direction... when I posted this at a site I belong to many wondered who
had
gotten my dander up... my honest answer? Myself.. this is totally
introspective.

Nakedness

how often do we wear the garb
of easy compromise, the cloak of
pretended indifference, the gray
shroud of willing omission,
or the gauzy veil masking
white-stained dishonesty...
simply because we fear
the nakedness that comes
when accepting absolute truth

Since you've like these thus far, here's one more.

Epiphany

Listening to Zenna's People stories I'm filled with wonder.
The God of light year strides condescends to me.
Speaking deep within where the soul's code runs
Commanding divine words
Don't be normal, be mine.
And the presence fills the air.

I had to smile here because my son could have written this yesterday.
Not
sure how many times he called saying how boring it was and he was just
looking for something to do. He does security and would have given his

eye
teeth to be on camera duty. This is great..and as you see it can be
about
anything... amazing how poetic we can get about those things we do not
think
of as poetic... you said it best.. seeking, questing, reaching.. well

done!

A slow day at the office

Wishing I were busy, this respite is not welcome,
Seeking usefulness, the day drags on.
Seeking, questing, reaching for purpose
A reason for being, a reason for being here now.
But this to will pass, and soon, I will seek rest.

Thank you Shawn! I rather like this one myself.. as I said I did
struggle
at first because I approached it in the wrong way but I found what I
wanted to say finally..

The other night I was sort of challenged to write a 40 word poem
about

'laughter'. I can't remember who exactly issued the challenge and I
do

apologize for that. I did try.. and to be honest I was almost
stumped
at

first.
But here is what I came up with... very simply said but quite
introspective
if I am being honest.

Laughter

I tuck them away,
each giggle and almost
unheard chuckle, every belly
jiggle and each Jello guffaw,
every snort and snicker,
and whoosh of plucked tissues
to absorb merriment's tears...
because sometimes what I need
most to remember is... laughter.
