[stylist] Becoming a lyricist/ getting my songs out there

Katie,
I've been hesitating to answer your inquirery, but since Bridgit has
mentioned me, I'll put in my two cents.

I am a songwriter and write both melody and lyrics, so I have never felt the
need to submit lyrics only to anyone. My efforts to interest the industry in
my songs has not been fruitful, and I ended up self-publishing my 3 albums.
I have set other people's lyrics to music, but it was for friends and not
something that was marketed.
My thought is that, since songwriters are a dime a dozen and the industry is
not really looking, that your best bet would be to team up with a musician
who is not into writing lyrics.

You can try the Performing Arts Division, there might be some instrumental
composers there who would be interested, but think about your local area
musicians as well.
Best,
Donna

Katie,

Brad would be a great resource, but also post your message on the
performing arts division list, if you haven't already. Donna Hill, who
is a Stylist member and also PR director for the performing division, is
an awesome resource as well. And of course Google will provide you with
a ton of info, but there is nothing like encountering an individual who
has actually done this. I'm just a vocalist and never submitted lyrics
to be published. Good luck. *smile*

Hello Everyone,
I have written lyrics for over 60 songs, and would like to submit
some of them to be used in mainstream music. (Think artists like Kelly
Clarkson and Evanescence.) I think Brad has had some experience with
this sort of thing, but I wanted to send this to the whole list to see
if any of you know anything about how to go about sending songs in. Four
of my songs, "Green Scapular," "7th Song for April," "No Running Back to
You," and "Inspirational to Me," can be heard at
www.myspace.com/kmorganmusic and I'd really appreciate any feedback.
Click on "My Playlist" under the "Music" heading to hear the
songs--there is a "play" button for each song. Thank you for your time
and assistance. --Katie Watson
