Sorry, but I disagree with Justin. Yes, an editor who gives you a personal 
response is doing it as a courtesy, but he/she wouldn't do it unless your 
work showed some merit beyond that which lies in the slush pile. I don't see 
how you will lose anything by sending a simple--thank you for taking the 
time to respond to me personally--type message to the editor. It costs 
nothing, and may help that editor to remember you the next time you submit.
Just my opinion.
