Atty,
Grant writing is actually a pretty exciting endeavor if you approach it
with the mindset of how your work can make an impact. As president of the
National Association of Guide dog Users, I am writing grants that will help
fund the work of the division while providing income to those who are doing
that work. For instance, the NAGDU Information & advocacy Hotline has a
highly skilled IT person who has designed the architecture of the hotline,
maintains it in working order, and makes enhancements to it regularly. Our
hotline refers back to our website, a dynamic tool for information about
guide dogs, our rights of access, and the NFB. We are in the process of
recruiting and training the advocates that will staff the hotline. We are
creating new affiliate divisions and have several initiatives on which to
work. All of these things are better accomplished when those doing the work
do not face economic stress, so we are looking for money to defray the costs
of these projects and pay those doing the work. It is exciting to be on the
forefront of change and this excitement carries over into the process of
researching the opportunities that are available and writing the grants.
Then, when I get the call from a grant maker that they have approved our
project for funding, that is really exciting!
Some of the work is very mundane, I will admit. So is packing a
parachute! But when you begin the excitement of a free fall, you are certain
the chute will open!

Fraternally yours,
Marion Gwizdala
