Although my four published books, two by so-called conventional publishers,
the last two ebooks, feature blind characters, I have received a lot of
comments from sighted readers, many saying that the characters gave them an
insight into blindness they didn't have before reading my books. Only one
of these was nonfiction. So, I think it would depend on what kind of book
it is. Certainly a nonfiction title, dealing with a topic likely to
interest mainly the blind community would have a lesser chance of selling.
So, I think that in the end it probably comes down to what kind of book one
has written, and exactly what one's goals are for one's writing. In
teaching a class or doing a workshop, I always ask participants to ask
themselves these things. No matter what the answers are they're right,
because they're the right thing for the writer.

I guess I'd be inclined to start out thinking as Julie and Phyllis are -
wanting to get as much mileage out of book sales as possible. Yet - knowing
that the blind community is small and the portion of it that would be
interested in any one blindness topic and/or type of book would be even
smaller. (The blind also have a large percentage of low income folks, too;
who are used to getting reading materials at no cost.)
On BookShare specific, I'm thinking the majority of their titles are books
that someone like you or me has freely scanned and uploaded; with no
permissions sought by the publisher and/or author. (The legality to do it is
covered by how BookShare is set up.)
No doubt, the blind author who writes mainstream stuff has the best chance
to make a dollar.
