[stylist] Reply to Publishing Questions

Hi Jackie,
Great questions! As always!
My MFA thesis is _A Commemorative Recollection_. It was published and is in 
the archives of West Virginia University AND the National Museum of Women in 
the Arts, Washington, DC. My career is archived there.
My themes there are based on pre-history and the collective memory. Memory 
has always been an abiding concern in all my work. I explore "memory" 
through art, literature, and historic artifacts in that work.

My tenure project was called _The Power of Memory_ and is in the archives at 
the library  at Geneva College AND the National Museum of Women in the Arts, 
Washington, DC. (My book of poetry, _Concerti: Psalms for the Pilgrimage_ 
was also a part of my tenure project and is also at the NMWA in Washington, 
DC as well as numerous public libraries and university libraries.

Again, you can see, the abiding interest in Memory.

I retain the copyright to all my work so I am free to publish anything I 
want to publish.  For this current series of "Silent Discourses" I am 
re-writing some of my previous articles and essays. They are greatly altered 
and deconstructed and will then have a new copyright on them because they 
are different from the former ones that are published.

When a book is published, you will see that the essays and poems that were 
published previously will always have a "note" attached to that piece. The 
note will list all former places that piece was published. You can look 
through any book of collected works by any author and see how this is done. 
It can be done in several different ways and really is a preference of the 
editor and writer as to how it will be done in that new book.

The one thing you have to be careful about is when you are entering a work 
for consideration, you have to be sure that the work was not previously 
published if that is one of the rules - such as the NFB Writing Contest. 
Some places do not care how often a work is published, but others do have 
this stipulation that they are the first publisher of the work. I keep very 
good records on each piece of writing so that I am SURE of where it has 
appeared or any other thing that I may need to know for future publishers. 
You can do this in any way that works best for you. I do in in computer 
files chronologically, and I do a back up of file cards - one for each 
poem/article with all the information on them that I need to keep track of. 
I just make a card for each piece, and then file it alphabetically in a 
recipe file card holder. It could also be put in a binder with those 
transparent pages - one card per page.

I hope this is helpful to anyone else who puts their work out to the public 
domain.
