[stylist] Awards and Coffee Cans/library

Great ideas, Ladies.
My daughter has started her new job - she just finished her MS in Library
Science. Just before she graduated, she was selected to be the librarian for
a brand new school that is being built, and it will open in August. It is in
Burlington, KY. The school is K-5, and Ilsa Barry is the librarian. She is
now ordering all the books for her new library. What a joy! I am going to
pass along your information though, so that she would be aware of needs of
blind children in her district and what she could do to make her library a
successful experience for them. She did do a lot of work in accessibility
as a master's student, and she explained to her prof. just WHY she was so
interested in this topic. You are so right, it is up to US to encourage
public places to be usable for us, too.

My experience this week, when sent by the blind association to a workshop
for 3 days was eye-opening, so to speak! Nothing there was adaptable at all,
and this workshop was for people with DISABILITIES - I had been assured by
two OVR people that there would be "everything you will need." Upon arrival,
there was nothing at all, and the three day experience was really a
challenge. As it turns out my OVR people sent me off to a workshop that was
not even what I needed or wanted - so it was a complete waste of MONEY, the
THREE DAYS my husband lost from his business because he had to take me
there - way too far away to drive back and forth - and a waste of my time
because it did not even pertain to my needs or plans. But, it certainly made
me very aware that even when an event is planned by OVR folks, there was no
consideration of what the blind person needed - even though I had written
them and called them well before to make SURE....and they didn't.
