When you hit the save as for titling your poem, shift over and go 
down the
save as file type box?  You're probably saving them as a ms word 
2007 which
makes them d o c x files.  Rich text might even do the trick.  I 
don't know
what mine look like on the page but that's how I save mine.

 Hi,
 This is mainly for people like Lynda who post their poems as 
docx files.
 Would you guys mind saving them as just plain doc files, like 
Barbara
 does? I can read the docx files but I have to send them to a 
converter
 first, but if you send them as doc it takes less time to read 
it.
