[stylist] Fair use, interview

About fair use, my understanding is that it deals with the number of words
you can use without getting direct permission from the author. Because I
published a book of poetry which had a quote at the bottom of each page,
some lines from a famous poet that dealt with the same theme, I had to
contact too many to make it a viable option. I contacted "Bartlett's
Quotations which said I must go to each original author of the quotations.
Then I consulted an attorney who looked over the book, and judged it to be
about 2/3rds safe because of the limited use. However, in a case where I
entered an entire five lines, a Cinquain, of Adelaide Crapsey, he said I
would be liable. So it might be dependent on how much you use of a writing.
I got the guidelines from The Chicago Manuel of Style, probably way outmoded
by now.
I suggest you Google it, and find an updated source.

Subject: [stylist] Fair use, interview

A reporter asked me yesterday what constituted Fair Use: He thought it
might be thirty words. Does anyone know for sure?

He interviewed me and David for an article about our writing class. We will
be reading our work (that is, the entire class will be doing this) at the
Merrick Center for the Arts on June thirteenth from one to three. However,
the reporter and his photographer seemed most interested in photographing
David's Braille stories. Of course. He also was impressed that David
didn't have a pity party when he wrote. (Positive attitudes still surprise
the sighted public). The article will most likely be in Saturday's Newsday.
(He hasn't said, but that is when they do their Senior Activities.)
