Like breathing. Just breathe.

When I was studying for the African American pnone conversation I had in
February - Rita Dove spoke to that, too. She said that people will often say
things like, "I don't know anything about poetry, but..." or "Poetry isn't
my thing but...." etc. She said it is because for some reason poetry
frightens people - they somehow have the idea they need to "know something"
about it; know the forms' know about meter, or rhyme' or about "enjambments"

and other things. You don't have to know any of those things to enjoy
poetry. It is about everything in our lives - the air we breathe, the green
peas cooking on my stove, the sunshine on my dog's back that warms my hand
when I tough him, the sky we look at, the rain that falls on the ground, the
dog barking next door, the breath we just took - all of it and more. It is
about everything that you are surrounded with for your entire life.
Somehow, people have been duped into thinking it is something so sacred or
academic that it is only for an elite few - that is the farthest thing from
the truth. Poetry is an utterance, as natural as a breath we inhale.
