[stylist] Discrepancies in Harry Potter

Eve,

I took a class about the Harry Potter books while at university. The
instructor was awed by the response to HP by the young and old alike, so
she decided to teach a class on it. We read all the books in a semester,
having to provide discussions based on a variety of topics each week.
The instructor also posted other sources giving literary and historical
background and context to much of the material Rowling borrows from and
references in the novels. We had to write a character analysis for a
final project; I chose Bellatrix.

Anyway, I read the books via audio from what is now Learning Aly, and I
caught several mistakes like the one you mention about the wand. I
pointed these out during classes, and it was surprising how many never
noticed them. Some were reading books with the corrections, but many had
editions similar to mine.

Another mistake I pointed out was that it's stated nothing and no one,
including Death, can see through Harry's invisibility cloak, yet
Professor Moody is able to see Harry while under it with his magic eye.

Another discrepancy I noticed had something to do with the Hallows, but
I can't remember now what it was.

Also, Rowling really loves ellipses. Is it a British thing? Noticed a
ton of them though.

Donna, You bring up a good point. I own just about every type of
publication that is Harry Potter and had read the books many many times
while I was still able. The first time I was listening to the NLS
versions I was shocked to find the mistakes and dialogue changes. I have
always wondered about the Braille copies. Are they like the audio copies
or like the printed books? There is a big difference and the mistakes I
found, actually affect the story for us true followers. Mainly I am
speaking of Incantado. The NLS version had the people coming out of the
wand in the wrong order and the dialogue was changed. This is an
important part as it is explained later and comes up again and again.
