When I am using my cane, I am a knight of the road. Blessed with speed,
skill, and extra sharp senses, I move with grace, power, and confidence.
There is nothing like reaching to my hip and drawing forth that cane;
hearing the series of quick snap and it fits itself into place in less than
a second. Then, I just get behind that cane, and I'm gone.

Yes, you are right. Why embarrass other people and ourselves when it is so
easy to give them a clue as to why we might not be able to find our seat in
the plane - people are helpful if they know we need a bit of help usually. I
do not use my cane in my home or out on my property walking the dogs in the
woods, etc. because I don't need it there. But I do take it anywhere else
where I will be around others and where there might be obstacles or
stairways that I might not navigate well.
I have to say, I feel like my cane is a "badge of courage" as I have worked
very hard to learn how to use it so I am safe and other's are forwarned I
might need some assistance or information. It gives credibility to me, and I
avoid being challenged unnecessarily. I am proud of my cane and thankful for
it. I don't have a service dog because I do not work any longer, and would
seldom need it - and I do have two pet dogs just because I love them. If I
had a need for a service dog, then I would love to have one.
