[stylist] Using cane or dog

Do you get the, "They're only trying to help." thing? That drives me nuts!
First, how about asking if we need help, or what kind of help we need?
Second, when they don't, it's reflective of the basic, most entrenched issue
we are up against -- they don't view us as equals in society.

I don't reward people for bad behavior. Ignorance does not give anyone an
excuse to handle me or treat me anyway they want. It is the hardes thing to
get others to see that. It is as if my family, and most of my friends make
excuses for stuff like that.

Back in Philadelphia, after I'd had several unpleasantnesses with the
criminal element, I developed a little move to extract myself when people
grabbed my arm on the street. I'm sure lots of people think I'm crazy, but
you really have to put a stop to it ASAP, whether they mean you harm or not.

Never let them take your arm. Never give up your power. I am guilty every
now and again of walking arm and arm with a pretty young lady from time to
time however. I might break the rules of sided guide just a little...
No, I joking. Usually, even with the ladies, I take an elbow. I don't
like being confined or entangled without the ability to move freely and
suddenly. My balance is so much better than most peoples that I trust my
own reflexes rather than their's.

Lynda,
If you ever need too, though, don't let them "take" your arm. It's more
ergonomic to take their elbow; that way, you are following, not being
pushed.

Yes, this is my experience, too. When I have my cane with me, I feel such a
freedom when walking with another person. I really cannot stand anyone
taking my arm at any time - using a sighted guide would be so cumbersome to
me. The cane gives me a sense of balance and assurance.
