Hi All,
I said a few days ago that I would share the answer I got from Create Space,
when I wrote to ask them if they had an option where you could send a
standard Word document and have them do the formatting. They actually
responded very quickly, but I'm just now getting to it. Here is their answer
and my interpretation.

If you submit your interior file as a .doc, .docx or .rft, we will
automatically convert it to a PDF and try our best to maintain the layout
and formatting of the original file. However, there are currently some
layout scenarios that may not translate properly with our conversion,
causing pages to shift incorrectly in your book and alter the number of
pages in the file. If you encounter this problem, we recommend that you
submit your file as a print-ready PDF in order to maintain the intended
formatting of your book.

So, it looks to me like you must format the Word document to their
specifications. Then, they will try to use their own PDF converter, but
there may be issues with it. If that happens, you need to make your own PDF.

I'm disappointed. They will copy edit your original manuscript, but not
format it. I think they're missing an opportunity here. They could have a
form for you to make decisions about what size you want the book, typeface
and size, spacing, etc. and then do it for you for a fee. Boo! I can't
believe it, but I guess I just have to keep learning how to use Word!
