[stylist] a small introduction?

I've read some of his work, a couple of the Xanth books, Alien Plot (which is his short story collection, and Split Infinity.  I generally like the stuff, but I have to be in a particular mood to get into his writing.  I would call his stuff more fantasy than science fiction (though some of his work is more SciFi than fantasy.
