[stylist] Introduction

I do trainings for public speaking and could write up something for this
list. I contributed a chapter to a booklet for the nonprofit Dress for
Success about public speaking during my internship with a PR firm. I
also do public speaking engagements locally as well for my NFB chapter.

    Well, I do not consider myself a public speaker but I will probably
be 
forced to do that especially if my book has a good endorsement.  Dr.
Norm 
Shaly is currently reading it, and I am hoping he endorses it.  He was
the 
first to open aschool in energy medicine and also developed the TENS
unit 
which are electrodes used for pain reduction.  I do workshops now on 
releasing trapped emotions and another one on altering your genes for a 
brighter future.  Private sessions are my favorite as well as combining 
essential oils to make rubs for different pains, diseases,etc.
     It is funny, though, how things come about.  I always said I would 
never do workshops but when we moved to VA  Beach, I met a wonderful
group 
on Meetup that showcased different teachers each week.  So because I
felt so 
comfortable with those folks, I did  a workshop and have done about 30
since 
then in different parts of the country.  We have an RV and made several 
trips around the workshops and did a lot of fun things along the way.

Ann,
Yes, Amazon buys up everything. They also own the Goodreads site and I
think Shelfari, both of which connect readers and books. And, they own
ACX which connects indie authors with people who want to use their
speaking/reading voices to make a living. That's the next thing for me
to look into when I have a mo *grin*

It sounds like you have several options in terms of niche markets to
pursue with your book. Do you offer presentations on motivation and

    Thanks for the info.  I didn't know Create Space was owned by Amazon
although I should have figured it out!
     My book is about my personal journey from blindness to vision with
sections on healing ourselves and drug-free solutions using essential

Ann,
Create Space is an Amazon company, so the payments are made by Amazon in
accordance with how you've set it up. I selected electronic transfer, so
the money goes right into our bank account. If you want checks, I
believe there's an extra fee. I'm doing all my own promotions, but
Create Space does offer some promotional services like press release and
video promo. I figured I'd do what I can do first. I get more sales from
Amazon directly than from Create Space. Being an Amazon company though,
you are charged less for having it on Amazon than if you used other POD
services.

What kind of book is it?

It's a flat percentage. BTW, if people spend more than $35 on Amazon,
they can get shipping free.

The author price has to be calculated based on your page count,
dimensions of book and so on. The cost of shipping to you goes down as
the quantity goes up, but the book price remains the same. I think you
have to buy $5,000 to get a lower book price. For instance, my book is
344 pages, 6" x 9" and black & white interior with the cream paper. My
price per one hundred is $5.70. This includes the shipping, and of
course you aren't getting any author royalties when you are the
purchaser.

On Amazon, The Heart of Applebutter Hill  sells for $12.59 & customers
who buy it in print can get the Kindle version for 99 cents. On Create
Space itself, it is priced at the list price, which is $13.95. HTH,

     I understand that they take 40 percent plus the manufacturing cost
of the book for being on Amazon.  So when Amazon sells a book, are there
any additional charges from Amazon or for shipping or does that all come
out of the 40 percent?  Also, when purchasing author copies, is that the

Hello Everyone,
     I am in the process of finishing my first book and am considering
self publishing.
     Wondering if anyone has experience with Create Space or knows of
soemthing better?  I do have some Create Space questions which could
certainly be asked off list if necessary.
     Also, I am doing references in the back of my book.  When I look on
Amazon, it seems as if the whole publisher's name is not there, nor is
the state.  Is there  any easy way to look those up?
