[stylist] Grammar: Two Words, One Word, or Hyphenated Words

Jim, this is one of those confusing aspects of the English language and of course even the suggested usages can have exceptions.
Usually nouns and adjectives are one word and verbs and adverbs are two words.
Example: You must make up your exam today. (make up is two words)
But if I were to say 'Your makeup exam is today.' then makeup is one word.
Confused yet?
In the case of outdated it is used mostly as an adjective and therefore would one word.
Oh the joys of the English language!
