The tall man in the black leather trenchcoat dropped  his ice cream cone wordlessly to the hot asphalt.  He reached under his jacket and pulled out a
44 magnum. Without as much as a squint or a smile, he fired five shots into the windshield of the Honda, where the previously whole man had decided to mess with him.

What happened next can only be described as all hell breaking loose...

Well, yes, most states have outdated, arbitrary laws that have yet to be changed. The process of changing or rescinding laws can be lengthy, even for silly ones, so sometimes the laws are still on the books, just never enforced. And in most cases, there's so many state laws, no one has the time or inclination to go through all of them. I've heard of ones such as you can't eat ice cream on a Sunday while crossing a street to you can't read a book in the park on a Tuesday without permission. Quite frankly, no one cares about these laws, and they are not enforced, though, thinking about it, I wonder what would happen if some litigious person tried bringing an action against someone violating such laws; legally speaking, since technically it is against the law; what would that lawsuit look like? LOL

Some outdated laws are more important; like laws against inter-racial couples, which as soon ago as the 90's were still on a few states books, and laws against homosexuality. When it comes to money, states probably care more about it then you would think. I would tread lightly there.

Some of the laws in some states are just plain silly, For example, I heard that in Rhode Island, it was illegal to buy a toothbrush and toothpaste set together on Sunday.
It would be interesting how many times these are actually enforced.  I bet there's not one persn in charge of seeing who enters writing contests.

Hi Atty,

This is interesting, and surprising to me, and probably most of our members.
I didn't read everything you sent, but the first link it to a document by a lawyer, and she certainly seems to know what she's talking about.  And, indeed, it seems like having a writing contest, at least, a large scale writing contest, is illegal in some states.  My guess is that no state official would pay much attention unless it was a big contest, involving a large amount of money, but then again, who knows?

The way around it, I suppose, is to work with a friend or colleague in another state where there's no legal issues.
