Hi you all
First: We need to thank our original creators of the Writers' division's
Facebook page. (If my prior long-time computer hadn't recently crashed, I
could give you all the names; I have back up, but right now it would take
too much time to dig that info out, pardon. (Kerry, Lynda, Shelley, Barbara,
???)
Second: Yes, using Facebook has become a major form of communication in
today's world - of being connected. And we as a Division are there,
however, it is obvious that many of us are in need of figuring out how to
best use it; posting to and viewing/reading it. We need to find a person or
two who can guide us on how to best setup the page so that it visually looks
good, and functions well for both sighted and blind users; it now may be, or
once was. Then also, we need some guidance, written and/or training for
those of us who are not up to speed on using Facebook.
Note, there is soon to come out a document relating to our new Federation
branding effort, which will give recommendations on what, and some specifics
on the how to set up your affiliate, or division, or chapter FB presence.
(I am on this committee, but hay, I didn't write this doc, but it looks
logical enough; it does not address the navigation factor of how a blind FB
user can best function there; I'm assuming this is up to the blind users to
figure out.)
A third comment here ... Gee, Facebook being a reflection of Humanities
newest and growing social medium, has also taken the usual Humanistic path
of being very changeable, while showing the too often lack of knowledge
and/or major concern about how its changes work or not work for we
screen-reader users. Nevertheless, some of us have, and will always figure
it out; and if not totally mastering it, but at least, making key parts
work.
Finally, it looks like it is time again to: Find individuals, here within
the Writers' Division who can help us better do: Make sure we can read our
own Facebook page? Meaning, making sure we have the right page
format/functions for both the visual and nonvisual users. And the knowledge
to have either/or both documentation of, and one-on-one guidance to help
members master Facebook.
Write me if you feel you can help us with any part of this. Email
newmanrl at cox.net or, call if you would like to help, or even if it is only
to rant! (402-660-1743)
Respectfully yours,
Robert Leslie Newman
