Hello everyone!



Now that I'm half recovered from AWP, I'd like to take this opportunity to
personally encourage all poets with disabilities to submit work to POETRY
magazine. Don Share, the editor, wants to see more disability poetry.

At the panel Jennifer Bartlett, Jim Ferris, Jillian Weise, and I did, Don
said he did not want to do a special issue or an installment of disability
poems. He's not interested in "ghettoizing" our poetry. He wants our poetry
in the magazine proper, and he emphasized POETRY's Open Door policy.

In the past year, POETRY magazine has done the following:

Published poems by Sheila Black

Published the "Disability and Poetry" roundtable

Published a feature on Larry Eigner, along with additional online material,
including a podcast

Proposed and sponsored a panel for this year's AWP, "Poetry and Disability"

Published poems by Jillian Weise

Sponsored the creation of an accessible, 3D poem by Weise, which included
Braille, that was displayed at AWP

And will soon publish some translations of ASL poetry

After all these, do you know what he said?  "I hope this is only the
beginning." The people at POETRY are serious about continuing with
disability poetry and serious about not putting it aside.

So send your unpublished poems their way. This very instant. You can find

Also: Prose pieces are welcome-criticism, memoir related to poetry in some
way, reviews, etc. And, sure, they could be interested in special
installments that are more specific, such as, to use only two imaginary
examples, poems from a workshop of brain injury survivors or a feature on
Braille-based poetries. If you have any such ideas, pitch them to POETRY!

Do forward this to all of the poets you know, including students-my first
appearance in the magazine was from when I was a sophomore in college, so
you never know . . .
