[stylist] Looking for ideas on good children's books

A couple of years ago, I started cataloguing books I read. When I finish a book, I write down title and author, and as I recall books I've read, I write them down. I read 3 to 4 books a week, depending on length and what else is going on in my life, and I tend to forget what I have read, so I write them down now. Since last Friday, I have read three books and just started on my fourth today, grin. Great thing about audio books, you can do a lot of other things while reading.

BTW, finished the memoir on the making of The Princess Bride and highly recommend it. Just started a book about the literary and artistic history of Sweeny Todd. Just started but interesting. Not my usual fare but sounded intriguing, and I like the Sondheim musical. For those who like the macabre and gothic and gruesome, you will enjoy this bio.

Isn't another of hers An Endless Ring of Light? Something like that. It's a great book. Bridge to Terabithia, is that Katherine Paterson? A Taste of Blackberries by I'm not sure who. Roll of Thunder, Hear my Cry. LOL! I can pull up titles but not the authors. The Sisters 8 series. Caddie Woodlawn by Carol Ryrie Brink.

It comes on a bit strong at times, almost preachy. And women are often villainized, which I find troubling. The Narnia novels just no longer have the depth and three-dimensional layers necessary in a story to carry it for me anymore. I still enjoy a lot of Lewis's adult writing, especially his nonfiction, but his children's stories no longer hold the same appeal.

Astrid Lingren's Pippi Longstocking stories. All L. Frank Baum's Oz books are grand. Lemony Snicket's Series of Unfortunate Events. Lucy Maud Montgomery's Anne series beginning with Anne of Green Gables. Jerry B. Jenkins and Tim LaHaye's Left Behind kids is a great series. If you've read the adult version of Left Behind, they are not as intense. Jonathan Swift's Gulliver's Travels. Is it Jules Verne who wrote 20,000 Leagues Under the Sea? All the Little House books. Magic Tree House. And Morton Juster's Phantom Tollbooth is AWESOME!

>>> Hey guys, while we are discussing books let me throw something out there. Lately, I have been reading children's books. Not sure why maybe just because it's something different and I've always been drawn to children's stories. Maybe it was because I like to read is that you and I want to be reminded of when I read though I'm sure I don't remember most of it. Just wondering if you've read any good children books and if you might recommend one or two. Maybe, I will write one some day.
