Yes, introversion/extroversion is a scale. We all have elements of both,
but will generally prefer one or the other. I view being introverted as an
element of personality. Introverts enjoy others, mainly in small groups or
1 on 1 settings and generally in quieter settings. After attending a party
or large group gathering, it is typical for an introvert to need time alone
to recharge. The introverts are the folks who enjoy room service and a good
book after a long day of convention meetings. The extroverts are the ones
who attend the after hours parties.

Also I view social anxiety or any sort of anxiety as separate from being an
introvert. There is a lot of social pressure to perform as extroverts do and
when introverts choose not to or feel exhausted by social events, we are
perhaps labeled as anxious or depressed or socially awkward and in need of
help. I'm interested in the idea that this is merely a social construct and
not in fact, something that needs to be fixed.

I hope I'm making sense. It makes sense in my head. I'm still working on
getting the words to match my thoughts. And yes, I'm an introvert. I score
in the 97 to 99% on the Meyers Briggs scale.

It's possible to be an introvert but exhibit extrovert behavior. And some
people are either able to cope with being introverted, or they are not
introverted to the point of being incapable of dealing with people. Depends
on anxiety levels. And I'm sure some are honestly both at times, not sure if
a word exist for people like this, grin.

Just as a feel good story, I met and attended the church of a Minister who
was an INFP. How unlikely is that?

Hello all!

I am doing some research for my next writing project. I am exploring the
topic of authenticity as an introvert. I am specifically interested in
struggling to fit in, social pressures, feelings of guilt for not going to
parties and anything else related to being an introvert, remaining true to
yourself while balancing that with the mainstream social pressures of
extroversion. My idea is that being introverted is normal, natural and a
part of who we are. I do not think it should be suppressed or overcome. I
would very much like to hear other introverts thoughts on this topic from
the perspective of their own lives.

I would prefer to talk by phone or Facetime. If you’re not comfortable with
either of those, I would be willing to email back and forth. This is the
initial research only. the questions will be very generic and broad.
Please don’t share anything you aren’t comfortable sharing. I don’t want to
be nosy, I do want to get a general sense if I am on the right track with
this idea and where to go next.

If you are an introvert and interested in talking with me, please send me an
email at julielj at neb.rr.com and we can sort out the details. I would
ideally like to talk this week or weekend, but next week is also doable.

thanks so much for being awesome! Write on!
