[stylist] Using music in your work, a question of legalities

HI everyone. Wondering if anyone knows the answer to this or where to look.
I'm working on...probably a book, but it cold be a long story, as these things tend to take on a life of their own and I never know until it's done how long it will really be. LOL. So I'm making some of the chapters lines to songs. How much can I legally use, of course giving the artist credit at the end of the book in a list, without having to pay for it, or can I do this at all without having to pay royalties?
