Here's a bit of information that I hope brings a smile. My granddaughter was in 7th grade last year. Her English teacher not only devoted a few weeks to poetry but taught various forms including tanka and haiku. I was so pleased to hear this. Caitlin told her about and her teacher asked if she could call me. During our talk she told me that the focus on poetry was changing and that structured poetry would be stressed but also free verse. I was asked to speak to the class and these children so embraced what I shared. I told them there is room for all kinds of poetry. Then they read theirs tanks poetry to me. I left that rooms in tears but they were tears of joy.
