The origin story of the word "Redneck" is the one you give.  The red nick,
AKA "Farmer's tan" is a badge of hard work upon the land.  It is a
distinction the "city boys" will not achieve.

In the better sort of Country music, there is a feeling however, that the
country spirit is truly country wide and that anyone can partake.

I think that people who style themselves "redneck" have some pretty set
ideas of write and wrong and hold to them.  The right includes being
hospitable and abhors malice (so rednecks are more set in there ways than
ignorant and bigoted).   Steriotypes on both sides of the divide.

Chris--I hadn't heard about the miner's origin of "redneck" before; thanks
for sharing.

Chris, I have never heard that, but have always learned a different, though
simular meaning to the term. A redneck is someone who is out working hard,
laboring in the sun. Even wearing a hat, the back of the neck is usually
exposed to the sun and eventually turns a lovely shade of red. From
experience, I can attest to this. Many times while working the ranch, my
neck would be sunburnt afterwards. It did not seem to matter that I was out
working every day. The color remained.
So I guess, which ever origin of the term you choose as the original, it
still is a symbol of hard work that likely goes unrewarded.
And just to be clear, I do not mean to turn it around and offend city folks,
so sorry if it came across that way. It is like the old Hank Williams Jr
song, Country Folk Can Survive.  And seriously, when the zombie apocolypse
happens, the rednecks of the world will survive. Cuz ya ain't gonna kill a
zombie with an iPad.
