Jesse I am by Jennifer Applegate
Jesse I am
Tall skinny and white
With silver eyes
I guide
Helping to find
Steep stairs, concrete curbs, and winding ramps
Brick buildings, glass doors, and tiny restrooms
Asphalt cracks crossing Guadalupe Street
Lynn's new apartment, a one bedroom
Up and down brown Flagstone floors, elevator closes tight
Door opens on ground floor, miniature Schnauzer meets me tonight
Buckwheat black leather boot heels tapp along hallway's right side
Small Silver doors bang shut, key opens Lynn's mailbox up high
Sitting on a steel barstool, she hears classmates clack by
Sitting on a scorching black bench, she hears buses blast by
Sitting on UT West Campus bus, she zooms to PCL tonight
Exploring a fancy hotel during convention time
Marching in D.C. among an army of confident strides
Scouring banquet room for an open chair at seven tonight
Clapping for the key note speech, eating gourmet food with steak knives
Black suade mule heels clack to the restroom, back of Megabus
Fat rubber wheels parked on concrete lot of Shell gas station
Glass door springs open, Lynn dashes to her dad's slate grey SUV
Fast dash to drink coco, eat fudge after photos of Christmas
Spring semester begins, Lynn brisks across icey sidewalks to school
Nubuck black boot heels tap, seeking hard to find
New glass doors, brick buildings, and English classrooms
Few friends to meet in Starbucks for study time
Jesse I am
Tall skinny and white
With silver eyes
Helping to find
I guide
