And yes, I just found out today that I've been accepted into the University of Nebraska Omaha MFA creative writing program. I'm waiting to hear back from another school, but won't likely hear back until sometime early next year, but this is super exciting.

Good information Bridgit. I neglected to say, the MFA program at  most universities requires entry  testing in at least one additional language besides English to get into a program.  Meet with the staff at each of the programs you are looking into, then decide where you fit best.

I myself have just been accepted into an MFA writing program. I already have

my BFA in creative writing. Among other things, I'm interested in teaching at the collegiate level. As Lynda has pointed out, to teach at higher levels, there's a specific track one needs to take.

To work in publishing and editing, among having a degree in writing and/or English, you will need plenty of experience. Many jobs in this field require

internships and entry level positions before moving into actual publishing and editing jobs. It's a tough, competitive industry, so seeking a masters is a really good idea, and can sometimes give you an advantage.

For publishing/editing, the MFA in writing will give you a great concept of what good writing is. And it will provide you with honed writing and editing

skills, crucial for the publishing industry. Personally, if you want to work

in publishing, I would pursue the MFA.

Are you a writer? When applying for MFA programs, they require a writing sample, which is what, in large part, your acceptance is based upon. The MA is equally competitive but usually does not require a writing sample, but you may need a GRE score.

Do you have programs in mind already? If pursueing the MFA in writing, I would find schools revolving the program around the workshop environment. 
You want practical experience, not just theoretical classroom experience.

I would continue to research, and contact people in the industry as well as instructors and ask these questions. This way you can find the best fit for you.

Good afternoon,                 I am a senior in college and am currently 
facing the daunting prospect of applying to grad school. I hope to become a writer or work in publishing. Given this, I am debating between getting my MFA in creative writing or my masters in literature. While I want to write, I also want to have jobs that I can fall back on if needed which is why I am

debating between the two programs.  I would appreciate hearing everyone's experience with these graduate programs or, if you are in fact a writer or work in publishing, I would appreciate a description of your educational background.
