[stylist] editing questions

When you go through a traditional publisher, they do story editing and
copyediting for you. Likely, your agent would do initial editing.

When self-publishing, it's on you to find editors. If you want the best
product possible, you find a good editor for both story development and
copyediting.

As a writer, it behooves you to learn about writing rules and structure
along with how to develop a story-- literary devices, scenes, narration,
exposition, etc.-- because if your material is burdened with errors and poor
writing, often times editors and publishers won't give it a second glance.

You can find freelance editors who will provide both story editing and
copyediting for a fee. This is good to do before submitting. What a lot of
people don't understand is that story editing is just as important, probably
more so, than copyediting. Just because someone can find grammar and
punctuation errors doesn't mean they can do story editing. It's good to find
someone who can do both.

Subject: [stylist] editing questions

Good evening. To everyone who has published books, do you have an editor,
or do you edit yur own books and have someone do things such as centering
chapters and adding italics? I work at a community college, and my boss has
been my editor. However, I will have a new boss next week and will no longer
be able to work with this boss as an editor. Should I hire a reader or find
someone else to help with editing? I enjoy writing but am not sure I'm good
enough to edit the books on my own. Thank you, and feel free to email me off
list.
