[stylist] Writing Software

In Word, you cannot "see" all of the scenes in a chapter at once or all
chapters in a book at once. Things are displayed differently in these
programs. Let me be clear that these programs never replace the actual
writing process. The writing programs simply pull things together in one
place and make them easier to find. Plus, if you need to export to various
programs it is much easier and often times more precise than Word.

Cindy,

I've only been blind for 12 years and am still very much a visual person.
This helps when I do PR work involving graphics and design, so I can
contribute thoughts or suggestions. So I do understand visualizing text, but
I don't see it being so different with Word.

I'm very curious about these programs and want to learn more. But some of
the arguments made for don't seem necessarily overly difficult with Word.
Keep in mind though, I have yet to experience a program other than Word. I'm
merely speaking based on how things seem and my experience with Word.

And again, I will point out that most literary writers still prefer Word.
Not that this can't change, and programs like Scribner sound like they are
growing, but most writers are still working with Word, blind and sighted, so
the visual aspect isn't always a problem.

I can visualize how blocks of text appear in Word, the various types of
formatting and fonts, how margins look, where material is placed, etc.
Perhaps I'm not understanding what you mean, but in terms of the textual
visualization, I'm not entirely sure how its different.

Bridgit,

I would also like to point out that for some of us visual type learners
(especially those of us transitioning from sighted to blind) these programs
place things in a way that is easier to "see" the whole picture and move
things around. Plus, they keep multiple backups. I have to remember when
using yWriter to ditch the bazillion backups when the project is complete so
that I don't inadvertently run out of space.

Sarah,

Sounds interesting and may have to check out. I know lots of writers though,
professional, students, professors, fiction, nonfiction, etc., and only a
handful use anything other than Word. Not saying it's not just a matter of
people being aware and switching, but several writers work with Word and
seem to find it adequate. But you bring up a great point, and this is worth
looking into.

Bridgit,

You might want to take a look at the numerous Youtube videos on Scrivener
and I think that it will quickly become clear why a program like Scrivener
is vastly superior to Word when writing books. Most of the videos begin by
pointing out why the individual offering the video stopped using Word and
switched to Scrivener. Among other things, all of your research documents,
notes, outlines, etc, are bundled with the writing project, yet kept
separate from the manuscript itself. Saving of the work is done
automatically every few seconds and can be saved on your local machine and
also on Dropbox, etc, so that your work is safely saved off site. If you
make changes to the manuscript and you decide "oops, I shouldn't have done
that" you can easily roll your work back to the way it was before the
change. Creation of paper and electronic books can be done automatically,
and those books can be put into different fonts and have other properties,
none of which effect your master manuscript. Chapters or even smaller
sections can be moved around easily, and all research and so on that is
linked to those book sections also move automatically. Even items you delete
go into a trash container that remain bundled with the book project, but the
items are not really deleted and can be retrieved from the trash. For
professional writers, Scrivener also allows its documents to be saved in
Final Draft format, which is the only electronic format that can be used for
submitting television and movie scripts to agents and studios. In short,
Scrivener is an entire system for writing and producing books as opposed to
simply being a word processor.

It's really quite impressive, and you might want to take a look at it just
to see what is possible for writers.
