I look for name meanings which can be found at Behind the Names.
That’sThat's a site with all sorts of interesting trivia about first
names--meanings, etymology, and such.

First a happy new year to everyone.
Names are fun. My mom keeps reminding me that she seriously considered
calling me gertrude when I was born, I have to say the prospect really
doesn't bother me LOL but I suspect a lot of people would prefer to not have
an old fashion name like that.
Last year I read sherrilyn kenyans character nameing source book from
bookshare, she covers names from all over the world throughout history so if
you need an old Latvian name for an old fashion character you might find the
information there.
Interestingly most of the males in my family have nicknames, and there given
names are almost never used except probably on legal documents. My
grandfather was always nibs as long as I can remember and I never knew my
uncle Butch had a real name until I became an adult.
Kenyan talks about how she researches her characters names making them fit
the time period and the person's character and placement. For me names just
seem to turn up. In one of my novels the mc is named Carolyn, not a name I
normally use so I'm really not sure where it came from but it fits her.
Usually names just come out of the woodwork along with the character.
Anyone have specifics on how they select names for there characters?
Tessa
