As far as motivation goes I generally say I'm going to work on one chapter or one idea every day and I don't care what I write in terms of whether it fits the idea or not. I just work on that idea and write whatever comes to mind and then go back later and fix it because if I don't do it that way I won't get anything done. The only way I can perfect something is to see it on the page and see the idea and it's concrete form and then construct it or let it construct me. It usually looks a lot different when I get done with it. I say wow what was that? I don't subscribe to the writers block so much because I just write words on the page. And then sometimes I will just look at the Chapter and say OK I need to fix the mistakes in here so I look for editing things in that leads to ideas about how to I move the story forward. What motivates me to write is holding the first physical evidence of my book in my hand or setting a deadline for me and then working every day to meet it. I don't usually stress about how much time I spend in the idea is to get something done. Sometimes I spent an hour writing sometimes two hours. Sometimes I will spend half a day on a project but not all of the time.
Sometimes what motivates me is to read a favorite author and see how they write their novels for their books whatever they are. I look at how they rate them although it's done unconsciously I don't sit there and think about what techniques they are using or anything like that. Sometimes those techniques are obvious and sometimes they aren't. I should write a blog post on this there is an old piece of advice read read read. That takes time but so does writing.
Another way I stay motivated is by taking time away from the project. And sometimes that happens naturally and we don't spend time writing. But in this case I mean maybe taking two or three days away from something especially after I have spent a lot of time working on things. I'm just some thoughts from someone who has been given an opportunity to write what I want. I couldn't have done this five years ago or even three years ago.

These aren't big goals, maybe just writing a bit each day. I'm fortunate because I do three columns with deadlines, and this forces me to actually write.
