[Stylist] Writing contest

Wow, your family is from some beautiful countries. I just love Hungry and England, but Russia and their language always intrigued me. Before I took my first group to Russia, I began studying the Cyrillic alphabet and their language. Over the years, I have forgotten a lot of Russian, but I use it whenever I meet Russian people at the NFB blind conventions. We do a number of state conventions, and Russians are now all over the United States, so I have an opportunity to use some general conversational Russian.

Have you ever been to the countries of your origin?

Roxane Gay is a woman. Despite the title, Bad Feminist is actually written by a feminist, but, it's about the lines between what we know, think and actually do. It's all based around her personal experiences. She's been writing for a while now, and is from my home town, but, she's really popular right now nationally.

Mystery/suspense/detective are not a genre I read a lot of, but, I will read anything good. This sounds interesting.

I'm as WASPY as they come, but, I've been trying to incorporate my heritage into my writing for a while. The past is fascinating to me. I love those shows like Who do you Think you Are? And my husband loves to do family trees. It's all so interesting. I'm of German, English, Irish and Hungarian and Russian heritage.

I haven't read any of his books.
When I'm not reading non-fiction, I enjoy a good mystery. A favorite author of mine lives in Italy, Donna Leon, who writes about Venice. This month, I'm bringing 40 people there, and managed to get a few of my clients to read some of her books before we stay in the city of canals.
When we arrive in Venice, I'm anxious to show them where the Commissioner lives and where the police station is.
Donna Leon's incredible vocabulary in both English and Italian, details the family and police life of "Commissario Guiedo Brunetti". He is the honest Venetian born police commissioner, who has the real frustration of being the captain, solving murders in a city where people push things under the rug, including the police.
If you like mysteries that are socially real, she writes them. Murders are solved, but the situations are rarely fixed because she writes about the real Italy, and much of it is corrupt. I am 100% Italian, and have a dual citizenship, I know it's real, but I still adore the country, people and the language.

-----Original Message-----If you ever do read any, begin at the beginning with "Death at La Finice". Oh my that sounded horrible! La Finice is the famous Venice Opera house.

No, haven't read that one yet. I just read Roxane Gay's Bad Feminist, which is a collection of essays. Gay is one of my favorite writers, and this collection is really good.

Some of both.
Have you ever read, If Life is a Bowl of Cherries, What am I Doing in the Pits.?
Her memoirs are just hilarious.

Were they memoirs or autobiographies?

Yes, that's right, and I've read a good portion of authors memoirs.
I guess I just love people and what I can learn from their lives.

Have no idea about the contest, but, memoirs are only on the best seller lists if written by or about a celebrity, and occasionally, if the subject is deemed interesting enough, you might see one, but, typically, it's celebrity memoirs and bios that sell.

Publishers pick up celebrity memoirs and bios because they know they will sell, allowing them to publish work by others that won't make much money.

Hi All,
Does anyone know if the writing contest will allow memoirs this year? It was very sad they did not allow them in last year.
Memoirs are a good portion of our lives. They add a lot to the writing contest, especially for young ones .
It can be cathartic to write about one's own experiences, and see the humor in life, along with realizing how one's life may encourage someone else.
Then again, reading about the life of someone else may do the same. That is why memoirs are always on the best seller list. To cut out memoirs seems to defeat the whole purpose of the writing contest.
How do we make sure they are included this year?
Janet
