Hello Barbara, Chris, Lynda and all,
Thanks for the feedback, I agree and will be most likely making two poems,
possibly a trio. It is exciting to find these nuggets of inspiration. Help
from other writers to point it out is the best kind of feedback one can get.
Keep writing,
Annie

Annie,
Yes, I had the same thought as Chris, about the outhouse.
A poem with the focus on the outhouse could be the answer.
I have the chapbook , _When Night Comes_ (Finishing Line Press), by Wes
Sims, in which he writes about a smokehouse , and it is memorable. His poem
is titled, "Maybe." I think you could do something like this with your
image of the outhouse, Annie.

I think the outhouse is something so memorable and valuable - with so much
content of it's own (NO PUN HERE) That you could do something memorable - in
a great way - with that image.
Maybe even something amusing or profound.

I have a memorable outhouse in my recollections of , growing up and going to
school in the 1950s. It was a very large outhouse - one for girls and one
for boys - at our school where I went from grades 1-8. I have vivid
memories of this building - definitely worthy of a poem.
Lynda

Hey Annie,

I tend to agree with Barbara's assessment. There are aspects of the cabin in
this piece, but my mind is drawn to the outhouse. Perhaps the cabin deserves
an outhouseless poem, and the dreaded outhouse deserves a poem of its own.

Happy Memorial Day.

Chris

Hello all,

This is from a families of veterans writing workshop. I know it isn't about
soldiers, but it is about going to the family cabin, where my Dad and his
brothers all hunted, and, all of whom were veterans.

The Cabin

By Ann Chiappetta

Pine scents, the echo of bird calls, hollow

sound of boots on the plywood floor. The squeak

of the cabin door and crunch of footsteps moving toward the outhouse. Worry

competes with the urge -- will

there be spiders? Will someone hear a scream?

Keeping an eye on the spider in the corner, mouth-breathing

to avoid the stink, it's finally done. Boots

make a hasty retreat from outhouse, clomp

back into rustic safety. Dusk

edges into night followed by

The soft swoosh of gas lanterns. Savory

Camp food aromas waft from the kitchen, the pop

Of grease and spices compete for attention. iron stove

and pump handle sink match the

warped and slanted floor. The shotgun

leans against the frame, a young

shoulder bruised from its recoil.

Bears prowl at night. So much

for the outhouse in the dark.
