Hi Ann,

Thanks so much for sending this.

I like prompts when I want to write but am not sure what to write.

I tried this exercise 2 years ago in which I found a list of 365 prompts online and tried writing them. The idea on the site was that you would do one per day of the year. But my writing bug was really itching and I had no creative writing classes at the time, so I wrote lots each day, and out of order at that.

I think I got to about half, give or take. It just felt like too much. I still have them, though: maybe I shall continue them.

Hi all,

Got this list from a blog, good fodder:

Non-Fiction Writing Prompts

Write about a moment that divided your life into before and after.

2. Write about a “missed connection.”

3. Recall a memorable (delightful, brilliant, cruel) teacher from your school days.

4. “The dignity of movement of an iceberg is due to only one-eighth of it being above water.” – Ernest Hemingway

5. Write about a book you loved as a child. Use this as a jumping off point to say something about who you are now.

6. Do something you’ve never done before. Write about the experience.

7. Find a piece of music that reminds you of a time and place from your past.

8. Write about a déjà vu experience, where one incident reminded you of another one from your past.

9. Write a scene of a personal experience that risks making you look bad.

10. Make the familiar unfamiliar.

11. Write about an experience where setting was your main antagonist.

12. Write about a childhood incident, using the “Voice of Innocence.”

13. Write about a twist of fate.

14. Write about a time you were a fish out of water.

15. Write about a time you or someone you know had a “status update.”

16. Write your own “modern love” story.

17. Write about a time your body rebelled.

18. Imagine what the life of a person you know was like before you met them.

19. Begin a creative non-fiction piece with a scene of movement, creating rhythm with your prose.

20. Write a piece about two incidents from your life that occurred in the same setting, finding a thematic link between them.

21. Write a creative non-fiction piece in the form of a list.

22. Write a piece using the 2nd person point of view.

23. Write a 6-word memoir.

24. Write a piece centred on your hometown.

25. Tell the other side of the story.
