My dog points
straining at the lead.
She sees squirrels.

Dogs are always good for Haiku.

I posted this on my FB Timeline and Pages today. With people staying at home and taking care of the children, I thought it would be a good activity to do with the children - but even if you are alone, it is fun to do. Write a Haiku Poem Today! I've been on a HAIKU WRITING BINGE for the past couple of weeks - and this season seems to be particularly inspiriting. (Is that a word? If not, it's a great new one to me.)

This HAIKU is from my morning walk with my dogs.
I wrote some posts for my Face Book Pages to encourage the writing of HAIKU wherever you are.
This is a great activity to do with the kids or by yourself as we stay in our homes and do our part to help in the crisis right now.

STAYING AT HOME WITH THE KIDS? Here is something you can DO TOGETHER. It is FREE, and you need nothing more than a piece of paper and a pencil or pen.
And, your observation skills.
-

Let's write a HAIKU POEM today!
Turn off the TV and keep your focus on the unique day that we can celebrate. This is a perfect SPRING DAY - birds are singing and calling to each other. The mist is refreshing the entire landscape and the little spring plants are beginning to pop up from beneath the dull brown leaves that kept them protected during winter. Take a WALK outside and GATHER some INFORMATION - and when you come BACK INSIDE, you can WRITE a HAIKU POEM about your experience.
-

HAIKU is a celebration of NATURE and SEASONS.

Write a HAIKU of CELEBRATION wherever you are..

It is a 3-line poem -

Line 1: 3 syllables
Line 2: 5 syllables
Line 3: 3 Syllables

Tips for writing a Haiku.

First:
Focus on a SEASON. You will be painting a picture of some aspect of that SEASON with just 3 lines of words.

Second:
Choose words that will REVEAL the SEASON. Just don't name the SEASON or MONTH. Your 3 lines will make a picture of that season or month.

Third:
You have a limited syllable count, (3 - 5 - 3 )
Carefully chosen words will make a picture of the season.

Don't waste the syllable count on little words that don't help to paint the picture.

I never use words such as: me, I, you, me, the, this, be, them, for, it, its, a.

You want each word to be the focus and not put in distractions that take your attention away from what you are SHOWING in the poem.

No title, no numbering, no capitalization, and no punctuation. Just the 3 lines of the Haiku is all that is appropriate.
Your space is precious so you want to use only strong words that give meaning and life to your Haiku.

This is a JAPANESE FORM of POEM.
Have FUN.
_____

I challenge you to write a HAIKU today and POST IT on your FB Timeline.

Your HAIKU may lift someone's spirits and bring them a moment of happiness.
Be sure to TAG me so I can see it, too!
