I think you made a better decision than I did - I just wanted all reminders to be gone now. I never thought of my hard times being good story fodder before. Have you ever used your old journals for new ideas?

I saved all those old journals, even the ones during bad times. I always thought, maybe this will come in handy for a story someday.

I, too, used to have braille journals I wrote during difficult times in my life. On my great Perkins Brailler, lovingly stuffed into three-ring binders on three-hole-punched braille paper. And when those hard times were behind me, I was only too glad to destroy the diaries. Now I wish I'd kept them. Same with some old e-mails (I've had this account since 2008.) I struggle with destructive self-criticism, where I'll see something I write and erase it just because it looks bad to me in the moment. So that's what inspired me to post this article.

I've always kept everything I write. In my garage I have boxes with braille journals, written before the home computer came along, every story, article, scrap, idea or anything, all the way back to grade school. And I have folder upon folder of stuff on my computer, backed up on multiple hard drives and dropbox and open drive. It isn't even like I go back and reread or compare. But everything I've written is part of me.
