Weekend at Pop's

"Fried ham, fried ham 

Cheese and baloney

 

Pass the macaroni salad

And we'll have onions pickles and relish

And more fried ham, fried ham, fried ham."

family trickles in and out

 

cool red Berry juice for the kids

Humid air captures and tends the aromas 

 

cooking clouds of sizzling skirt steaks

drift like tantalizing

culinary canaries

enveloping Pop's sweaty face.

 

Roasted sweet peppers and 

barbequed chicken and Kielbasa

 

Sun drenched or umbrella shady 

all day the eating, drinking

Talking and laughing 

During Pop's summer BBQ.

 

meat roasting

Beans bubbling

Hot dog slathered in bright mustard

Chili and kraut

 

The tang of it

Cements the good times to

Tongues and hearts. 

 

Pour from the jug of homemade red

Or maybe grab a brew.

 

Tell jokes or throw darts

and when it's over and the coals burn from red to gray

sing the last song before the coming night takes it all away.
