A Zip Ode is a poetic form that uses the numbers of a zip code to determine
the number of words or syllables in each line of a poem. Each line's word
or syllable count corresponds to the numbers in the zip code, creating a
unique and personal poem about the poet's neighborhood or hometown. The
zero in the zip code is not represented, only numbers from 1 -9 are used.

The form is a great form for beginning creators and kids will love writing
something unique and fun.

10543 - Zip Ode

My

House by the harbor smelled

salty and fishy sometimes

I liked it.

Repeating the pattern in multiple stanzas is a great way to expand the
imagery and emotion of a remembered home and the feelings it provokes.

floods

chased us from New Rochelle. Now Happier in western Pennsylvania

Heartlands

Dried our soggy spirits, warmed

Chilled, exhausted attitudes

Home.

Three

Rivers, green pastures and steel

Sharing

Quiet Nights with katydids

And peaceful Mornings together sipping coffee.

"We are cups, constantly and quietly being filled. The trick is, knowing how
to tip ourselves over and let the beautiful stuff out."
