I took my dogs out, as usual, around 5 am. We stepped gingerly over a carpet of brilliant yellow Ginkgo leaves, thousands of little fan shapes, on the ground, sidewalk and porch. Each footstep makes a soft but crisp crunch as we stepped over that natural carpet in the darkness.
